Our first website comment ever - see the post below - is a special enough occasion to deserve it's own post as a respone! Soooo... the question was, "Do I really have to dead-head my gardenias"?
Well HELL NO you don't!
Sure, there may be some dead flowers on there, but more are gonna bloom up. The dead ones may be brown and ugly, but at least that's how nature punishes the weak ones intended! On the other hand, if you're trying to show off your hard work - dead brown flowers on a live bush look kinda tacky and show everyone that you're white trash.
Now now... don't get worried - you can save your Morning Glory Circle reputation and STILL not have to dead-head. All you need to do is invest in two pairs of Felco #2's and about $15 worth of one dollar bills. You've got kids, so all you have to do is 'seed' the bush with the dollar bills... stick some greenbacks up in the branches so they'll be discovered upon close inspection - then set the kids loose dead-heading that gardenia bush. Sure, they'll think it sucks - until one of them hits that sweet sweet temptation of dinero. From there on out grab some sweet tea and a fan, sit back, and watch the dead-heads fly!
Yeah - it's a cheap trick, but my parents pulled it on me and my brother when we were kids weeding the snapdragon bed. Once I found that first dollar bill - weeding didn't seem so bad. Who says dead-heading has to be any different?
